Drilling Fluid Systems: Natural Gel - Potassium Chloride (KCl)
The NATURAL GEL/POTASSIUM CHLORIDE (KCl) system is a highly inhibitive mud system relying on the potassium cation for inhibition. Potassium chloride is carried in the fluid at 30-50 kg/m³ giving a K+ concentration of 15,000 - 26,000 mg/L. Natural Gel is the primary viscosifier and must be prehydrated prior to adding to the system, Kelzan XCD can be added to enhance carrying capacity. PAC and starch must be added to control fluid loss properties. The objective when using this system is usually to drill to the zone of interest as quickly as possible while imparting a chemical stabilization to the reactive shales.
